Churches

The Protestant church in Werben was built after 1311 in the Gothic brick style. With its highly visible white spire, the building is situated close to the Gherkin Cycle Path and has an interior decorated in Baroque style. When you visit the church you are instantly struck by the baptismal angel and the ceiling, which is richly adorned with illustrations of fruit and vegetables: it was these Baroque paintings that prompted Spreewald cook Peter Franke to nickname this building the “Vegetable Church”.
It was here that in 1762, Carl Alexander von Bismarck married Christine Charlotte Gottlieb von Schönfeld – the future grandmother of the Prince of Bismarck. The altar, pulpit and baptismal angel came from Riedebeck near Luckau in 1962.
The church has been a “cycle path church” since 2014 and is open daily between Easter and Reformation Day. The entrance is on the northern side.
