Towers, gates and “Wiek” houses built into the walls mark the outline of the Altstadt – the old town. The Münzturm and Spremberger Turm towers delimit the 1,200-metre-long section of the
old fortifications. In 1879, a passage was cut through the old tower in Mauerstrasse so as to allow faster access to the market in the new town (Neustadt) from the old town (Altstadt). This
created the Lindenpforte gate. The Münzturm (coin tower) is the city‘s oldest tower. It was probably here that, as long ago as 1483, the Cottbus city fathers minted the Cottbus “Heller” coins
bearing the city’s heraldic symbol, the crab.
