Once the most important trading site, originally surrounded by half-timbered houses. Today the old market square is an impressive ensemble of Saxon-style Baroque town houses and
neoclassical eaves-fronted houses dating from the 18th and 19th century. A more recent addition dating from 1991, the market fountain is an octagon with a central column emulating the
lines of historical fountains. The fountain sculpture and sandstone relief depict old established Cottbus trades.
