Jamlitz Documentation Centre

Lieberose labour camp in Jamlitz was the second largest secondary camp assigned to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. It was built in autumn 1943 to exploit inmates by having them construct a large military training ground. By the end of 1944 the camp was occupied by 4,000 prisoners, 90 per cent of whom were Jews. The inmates were subjected to inhuman labour and brutal maltreatment. The dissolution of the camp in February 1945 led to the mass murder of 1,342 prisoners who were too weak to go on the forced death march to Sachsenhausen.
From September 1945 onwards, the Soviet secret service used the site as its Special Camp No. 6. German civilians were imprisoned here who were accused of Nazi crimes and active membership of the NSDAP or attempted partisan activities against the occupying power (the Nazi organisation Werwolf). One third of the more than 10,000 internees in Jamlitz died due to the catastrophic prison conditions. In spring 1947 the remaining prisoners were distributed among other special camps.
In 2003, two open-air exhibitions were opened to commemorate the secondary concentration camp and the Soviet special camp.
