There is no other product the Spreewald is more famous for than the gherkin. The Lübbenau Gherkin Tour not only offers lots of opportunities to taste this speciality, it also reveals many a secret accounting for its excellent flavour. After registration at the tourist information centre Lübbenau, a gherkin pickling plant can be visited where the different varieties can be tasted. There is even a “gherkin harvester” to see – in fact tourists sometimes even get to ride on this peculiar contraption.
Even without the organised part of the programme, the Gherkin Tour entirely lives up to its name. All along the path with the cycling gherkin there are tasting stands. Some restaurants offer gherkin dishes that you will not find on the menu elsewhere. There is gherkin stew, gherkin soup, braised gherkin and even a gherkin set meal. And there is no time pressure here: the various stages of the tour pass by comfortably without any major climbs.
